Plan information is loaded from Australian Energy Regulator (AER) Energy Product Reference Data when you run your comparison. It is not a copy kept by Money Detective.
How the estimate is calculated
Your figures, applied consistently
You enter or upload the usage, billing days and rates from your bill. The same usage and billing period are then applied to the published rates of each plan you add, so every estimate covers the same period.
What is included
The daily supply charge and usage charges, plus controlled load and a solar feed-in credit where the plan publishes a rate the tool can match. A yearly figure is scaled from your billing period and assumes similar usage.
What is not included
Discounts, incentives, eligibility conditions and extra, payment or metering fees are not applied to the estimate. They are flagged so you can check them. Plans with complex pricing, such as demand, seasonal, stepped or time-of-use rates that cannot be matched reliably to your bill, show “Review needed” instead of a price.

Results are estimates, not quotes. Confirm the current plan terms, rates and eligibility with the retailer before you switch.
Which plans are included
Where
New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. Western Australia and the Northern Territory are not covered by this data source.
Which plans
Current residential plans that the retailer has published for your postcode and fuel type. Business plans and plans no longer on offer are not shown.
How you choose
You pick a postcode and a retailer from a list maintained by Money Detective, then choose a plan from that retailer. The list may not include every retailer in the market.
Plan limit
If a retailer has more than 250 matching plans, only the 250 most recently updated are listed, so some plans may not appear. This is not a comparison of every plan or the whole market.
Important to know
This is a comparison starting point.
Some plans contain complex conditions that cannot be reduced to one simple number. The tool will flag these rather than presenting an unreliable estimate.

Does this tell me which plan to choose?
No. It helps you compare plans you are already considering. It does not recommend a retailer or plan.
Will every plan produce an estimate?
No. If a plan uses complex demand, seasonal, stepped or time-of-use pricing that cannot be matched reliably to the bill information, the tool will tell you to review it manually.
Which locations are covered?
The AER data currently covers New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. It does not provide Australia-wide plan coverage for Western Australia or the Northern Territory.
Is my bill stored?
No. The bill PDF is read in your browser to prefill the comparison. It isn't uploaded to Money Detective or anyone else. Review the Privacy Policy for further information.
