Why I started Money Detective

Alex, founder of Money Detective

There's no second income in our household. Just one wage, one budget and a family relying on me to make it work.

That's how Money Detective began. Not as a business idea, but because I needed it.

When you're managing a household on one income, you quickly realise that a lot of budgeting advice doesn't really help. I didn't need another lecture about giving up lattes. I needed to know which bill had crept up, which subscription we no longer used and which small changes could actually make a difference when there wasn't much room left in the budget.

So I started looking more closely at our own expenses. I compared bills properly instead of letting them renew automatically. I tracked what we were really spending and paid attention to the changes that genuinely helped over time.

There was no one big breakthrough. It was one bill reviewed, one forgotten subscription cancelled and one better plan found before the old one renewed. Small changes, but over a year, they made a real difference.

Money Detective brings together the tools and lessons I've built along the way: practical templates, useful guides and straightforward ways to find savings in everyday spending.

I created it for other families trying to make one income stretch further, so they don't have to start from scratch like I did.

No unnecessary sign-ups. No sales calls. No confusing fine print.

Just practical ways to keep more of what you earn.
